Unresolved Threads

Dangling mysteries, unanswered questions, and unfinished arcs — from the original campaign, from the Ending Outline, and from the Bridge Material — that could plausibly resurface in Gods and Dragons. Per CLAUDE.md, these are recorded as open questions, not speculated answers. Where a thread has an in-world theory attached, it's labeled as a theory/rumor, not fact.

From the original campaign (Chrono Conundrum)

  • William. Explicitly logged as a "Loose End" in the Ending Outline's Confirmed Details table: "Left open for later inconvenience." William recurs across multiple eras as the king's advisor, repeatedly steals the party's gold, and has an unclear relationship to Magus and to the various timelines. His ultimate fate and allegiance are never resolved.
  • Castle Umbra and the Order of the Abyss. Older Trout Stories.md ends mid-scene with Grandmaster Trout, years after the main campaign, agreeing to investigate Castle Umbra — the home of the vanished Order of the Abyss — at Farrow's request. What they find, if anything, is not in the source material. The Order's actual disappearance ("no bodies, no blood") is now confirmed by Additional Materials/Blood_Hunter_Lore.md, but the cause remains unknown — the "dragged into the Abyss by demons" theory is still just a rumor, not confirmed fact. Castle Umbra's lower levels are also said to descend into the Underdark, unconfirmed.
  • Onyx's missing brother, Obsidian. Established as missing since before the campaign began (Mr. Frog: "No one has heard from Obsidian since Onyx went missing"), later confirmed dead (his body found in Session 33, killed by Ozzy's dragon, holding a fragment of the halberd). His death is confirmed, but the circumstances of Ozzy's original betrayal of him and Magus's role in it are only partially explained.
  • Onyx's mother(s). See Contradictions and Open Questions for the Odelia/Pearl question — if these are two different women (hag mother vs. birth mother), the birth mother's full story is untold.
  • The Inquisitor. Arthur's wife's killer, later revealed to serve Magus and to have a grandfather who died at a "destroyed castle" whose tome he studied. His ultimate fate isn't stated in the sessions reviewed (the campaign log ends before this plot thread is resolved, and the Ending Outline doesn't mention him by title).
  • Kaelion's fate after the coup. The Ending Outline explicitly leaves him alive and escaping through a portal, naming him "BBEG for the Windsor triplet campaign" — i.e., this thread is meant to resolve in Gods and Dragons, not before it.

From Laethan's backstory vignettes

  • Who planted the notes in "Notes In The Shadows"? Someone deliberately baited teenage Laethan into triggering a forbidden summoning array at the Academy, then planted evidence to frame him — but was never identified. Possibly Felix Blackwood (consistent with his other campaigns against Laethan), possibly someone else entirely.
  • Drift's later relationship with Laethan. Drift set Laethan up with his first jobs in Athkatla at Amara's request and is last seen toasting Laethan's new nickname ("the Infernal Thief of Justice"). Whether Drift remains a contact, ally, or loose end by the time of the Chrono Conundrum campaign or Gods and Dragons is not stated.

From the Ending Outline (Planned Canon, unplayed)

  • Ravina's vision. The Ending Outline notes: "Details of the vision's specific contents to be confirmed with Daphne's player" regarding how Ravina Moreau saw the path to Daphne's resurrection. Never specified.
  • Queen Zeal's successor. The outline says the throne "passes to rightful heir — a new character who becomes a dear friend to the Windsor family," but does not name this character.
  • The full mechanics of Daphne's post-resurrection nature. The outline says she returns "not exactly what she was... something more," without full specifics beyond her stated divine domain.

From Bridge Material (Wolfgang Windsor Backstory, Older Trout Stories)

  • What Wolfgang's siblings and parents were never told. The backstory explicitly states the family chose not to tell Wolfgang the full truth about Bruthys's betrayal and the mask-swap that put him in danger instead of Demyra: "Those details could wait, perhaps forever, if the family had their way." Whether Wolfgang ever learns this is left open — a clearly intentional unresolved thread for Gods and Dragons.
  • Sera's unborn child. Daphne secretly took the soul of Sera's unborn child at Trout's request, sparing it "the cold of the grave" — "Wolfgang never knew." What became of that soul is not stated.
  • Daemon Karass's whereabouts. After orchestrating the raid on Castle Orion that killed Sera and five students, Daemon is never confirmed caught, killed, or otherwise dealt with in the source material.
  • The Sableflame remnants. The backstory states House Sableflame "did not die; it curdled" after the safehouse fire — Kaelion rebuilt with "accountants... mages... mercenaries," explicitly setting up ongoing antagonism: "This is not over. It is merely the quiet between waves."
  • The eye and the hand. Wolfgang's missing left eye and permanently damaged left hand (from Sableflame torture) are stated as lasting, unhealed injuries. Whether any future magic, divine intervention, or plot event addresses them is unresolved.
  • The Windsor sibling tattoos' magic. Daphne wove Sending and Locate Creature magic into the triplets' matching tattoos "so you'll always be able to reach each other. Always." — a Chekhov's-gun-shaped setup with no payoff yet in the sources.

From Cassian's backstory (Additional Materials)

  • Rhea's pregnancy. The backstory ends with Cassian learning that Rhea — an aasimar death cleric of Lavos he fell in love with while trapped under rubble during the siege of a Lavos-cultist stronghold — is pregnant with his child. He proposed; she did not accept. He has told no one in his family. This is the single largest open thread the document introduces and a natural starting point for Cassian's arc in Gods and Dragons: whether/how he tells his family, what happens with Rhea and the child, and how his paladin oath and his worship of Daphne square with fathering a child with a cleric of Lavos.
  • Corus Sableflame's death. Cassian kills Kaelion's son Corus during a failed attempt to rescue the captive Wolfgang. It's not established anywhere in the sources whether Kaelion knows Cassian specifically killed his son, or what (if any) role this plays in Kaelion's motivations going into Gods and Dragons — a plausible personal grudge against Cassian specifically, on top of the general antagonism toward House Windsor.
  • The black flame symbol. The letter Cassian finds in Bruthys's room, outlining the plan to "rescue" Demyra, is signed only with a symbol — "a black flame" — rather than a name. Whether this symbol recurs anywhere else (a Sableflame sigil, a cult mark, something else) is not stated.
  • Arabella and the circus. Cassian's first love left with a traveling circus and was never seen again in the source material; whether she returns, and the likely connection between her friend "Sera" and Wolfgang's Castle Orion partner Sera, are both open — see Contradictions and Open Questions.
  • Daphne's private doubt about her own immortality. See Contradictions and Open Questions — she reassures young Cassian she can't die again, while privately unsure that's true. Unaddressed anywhere else in the sources.

From the Blood Hunter Lore document (Additional Materials)

  • Vosh's tenure and death. Additional Materials/Blood_Hunter_Lore.md states Trout appointed Vosh his successor as Grandmaster of the Order of the Stars, and that Vosh has since died — prompting Trout to move to a council-of-five structure. Neither Vosh's time as Grandmaster nor the circumstances of his death are described anywhere in the sources.
  • Lyrei and Malachi's current status. Both are named in Blood_Hunter_Lore.md as survivors of fallen orders (the Succubus and the Dragon, respectively) who found their way to the Order of the Stars. Nothing beyond that bare fact — their current role, whereabouts, or arc — is in the source material.
  • What became of the other Order of the Stars survivors and recruits named only in passing (e.g. Ember, Solas, Samson, Gamble in Older Trout Stories.md) beyond their being part of Trout's circle at the time of that vignette.

From The Last Diamondback (Additional Materials)

  • Trout and the Dandelion family. Trout's birth parents, Dolores and Angus Dandelion, and his six younger brothers, resurface as refugees in Moonveil after the Dread Gloom's rampage. Trout leaves them without reconciliation — no promise to write, visit, or forgive — beyond acknowledging the dragon's death will let them rebuild. Whether he ever reconnects with them is untouched by any other source.
  • The Dread Gloom's horde of books and scrolls. Described as "towering stacks" of ancient arcane knowledge "written by peoples long forgotten in dead tongues" — implied to be worth returning to ("if she survived this, she could have a proper look at them all"), but never followed up on. What became of this trove after the castle's rebuilding into Castle Orion is unstated.
  • Hephaestus's missing memory. Hephaestus wakes with total amnesia after his phylactery-gem is destroyed and takes his name from Trout on the spot. Nothing in the sources indicates whether he ever recovers any memory of who he was before serving as the Dread Gloom's phylactery vessel.

From The Swordmaster (Additional Materials)

  • The nature of Cassian's dark power. In killing Udisam, Cassian manifested something unlike his usual divine paladin abilities — glowing red eyes and an unnatural compulsion that forced Udisam, mid-fight, to collapse and beg. The source material never explains what this is (infernal heritage surfacing under extreme rage? something else entirely?), and Cassian has told no one. A natural seed for future conflict given his identity as an Oath of the Ancients paladin.
  • Whether anyone connects Cassian to Udisam's death. Udisam was a city constable; his killing, however justified, is never shown being investigated, reported, or explained to the temple or city authorities.
  • Cassian and Ezra's relationship going forward. Established here as childhood sparring partners/cousin-figures (Ezra being Trout and Elysia's son), but nothing else in the sources develops this relationship further.

Prophecies, threats, and forces not yet paid off

  • Kaelion's "the next campaign's villain" status is confirmed intent (Ending Outline) but his methods, goals, and current resources beyond "he wants Laethan on his knees... the Windsor name scratched off the coast" are otherwise unspecified.
  • The demons of the Abyss and the fate of the Order of the Abyss remain an open cosmological loose end (see Castle Umbra above).

How to use this page

When new session material for Gods and Dragons is added, check this list for threads that get addressed, and update or remove entries accordingly (moving resolved threads into the relevant character/event page rather than deleting the history of the question). Add new threads here as they arise rather than letting them live only in session notes.
