Daphne Windsor¶
Cleric of the Chrono Conundrum party, later (per Planned Canon) a goddess and the matriarch of House Windsor — wife of Laethan Windsor and mother of Demyra, Wolfgang, and Cassian.
Overview¶
No standalone backstory document for Daphne's own life exists in the source archive — Daphne.md is present but empty (see Source Inventory). Most of what's known about her comes from the Chrono Conundrum session notes, the Ending Outline, and the Wolfgang and Cassian Windsor backstories. She is introduced to the party in Session 2 by Marle, and serves as the party's primary healer throughout the campaign.
History¶
The Chrono Conundrum campaign (Played Canon)¶
Daphne joins Laethan, Onyx, Belgarian, and Arthur early in the campaign and becomes central to the party's survival, repeatedly healing, blessing, and protecting her companions across dozens of sessions. Over the campaign, her magic increasingly responds to something beyond her training — most explicitly from around Session 33 onward, when her spells begin manifesting as "warped," necrotic, or unnervingly powerful, and she begins hearing a voice she comes to recognize as her father's.
In Session 40, confronting Magus in Kaelion's coup, the truth surfaces: Magus is Daphne's sister, and Daphne is Lavos's daughter. Their mother, per Magus, made a bargain with Lavos for daughters; Magus discovered this and fled to become Magus. Daphne's own divine power is later confirmed to be capable of both healing and — when she channels Lavos directly — something closer to necrotic devastation (Session 44, the battle with the black dragon Azalea, where Daphne accepts Lavos's power and helps slaughter an army of lizardfolk before being forcibly polymorphed into a frog by Belgarian to stop her).
By the end of the played campaign (Session 51), Daphne has been captured in Enhasa, and a five-million-gold bounty has been placed on her — explicitly higher than Laethan's, with Queen Zeal wanting her taken alive.
The Ending Outline (Planned Canon — never played)¶
Per Chrono_Conundrum_Ending_Outline.docx.md, the intended ending has Daphne learn the full truth from the imprisoned goddess Demeter: her mother Jane Windsor bargained with Lavos for daughters; her sister Olivia discovered this and became Magus. Daphne is ultimately given a choice by Lavos: live eternally on a lifeless plane with him, or sacrifice herself to banish him and save her friends and the world. She chooses sacrifice. Lavos, attempting to absorb her and break his word, is destroyed instead — "but a kernel of Daphne remains. A single, golden seed. Three unborn babies protected by Demeter."
A year later ("the Gap Year"), Ravina Moreau receives a vision of how to resurrect Daphne. The party gathers at the volcano where Lavos's power first claimed her; Ravina's death-and-life framework, Demeter's restored divine power, the party's grief and refusal to accept the ending, and Lavos's own absorbed power (turned against him) combine to bring her back. She "is not exactly what she was. She is something more." She becomes a goddess — Goddess of Light — with a wide domain (see below), and takes the last name Windsor upon marrying Laethan at a ceremony in the High Forest, on the hillside where she grew up.
Daphne's Divine Domain (per the outline): gentle light and warmth that survives cruelty; emotional healing and comfort after violence or grief; protection of loved ones and safe journeys home; treaties, reconciliation, and the ending of war; recovery and rebuilding after devastation; compassion, mercy, and kindness as acts of defiance; found family, sanctuary, and safe rest; hearths, shared meals, warm baths, places of belonging; healers, caretakers, midwives, herbalists, librarians; hope, romantic idealism, courage through softness; stories, memory, preserving beauty through dark ages; returning home alive. Sacred imagery: sunflowers, candlelight, open books, warm hands, lace veils, golden fields at dusk, moose.
As a goddess, Daphne mediates peace between the humanoid and monster races in the aftermath of the "Monster War," with Laethan — a former hunted "terrorist" — standing beside her as living proof of her message.
Her own account of the sacrifice and the Gap Year¶
Additional Materials/Cassian_Windsor_Backstory.md gives the fullest first-person description anywhere in the sources of what the "Gap Year" actually felt like from Daphne's side, told to a young, frightened Cassian who asked how she became a goddess. In her own words, she existed "somewhere in between" — able to see Laethan and Trout but unable to speak to or touch them ("I could blow into their hair and warm their hands... like I was caught in a looking glass"), watching them grieve without being able to help. Demeter was with her for at least part of that time, and the two discussed "philosophy, the tragedy of love, the concept of time and space, the meaning of life and divinity." She told Cassian she felt no pain in the sacrifice itself.
When Cassian, upset, asked if she could die again, she told him "Of course not, silly! I'm not going anywhere" — but privately, the same passage notes, she wasn't sure that was true: "A god could die, she had done it herself. Immortality did not mean unkillable." This private doubt is not addressed anywhere else in the sources — see Unresolved Threads.
Gods and Dragons¶
Per Wolfgang Windsor Backstory.docx (Bridge Material), Daphne builds the Windsor Estate on the Elongated Isle, raises the triplets with Laethan, and gives each child an extraordinary pet (a black jaguar for Wolfgang, a 35-foot python for Demyra, an Irish Elk for Cassian) — animals of genuinely dangerous species she insists, with perfect serenity, are perfectly manageable. When Wolfgang is abducted by House Sableflame, her rage at the trap that kills Bruthys Countrat (a Power Word Kill ward, meant for her) leaves her questioning her own power for the first time; she and the full pantheon (Demeter, Tyr, Lathander, Selûne, Kelemvor) intervene to retrieve him, and she spends the following recovery period relearning restraint — hesitating, asking rather than commanding, present at Wolfgang's bedside through his nightmares. She later calls on Trout Brightshield directly to train Wolfgang in controlling his lycanthropy, and personally enchants the triplets' matching tattoos with Sending and Locate Creature magic so they can always reach each other.
Family¶
- Spouse: Laethan Windsor
- Children: Demyra Windsor, Wolfgang Windsor, Cassian Windsor
- Sister: Magus (Olivia)
- Father: Lavos (per Magus's revelation)
- Mother: Jane Windsor, per the Ending Outline — meaning Windsor was Daphne's birth family name; Laethan took her name upon marriage, rather than the name being newly coined at the wedding
- Pet: Bernard, a moose
Secrets / Hidden Information¶
- Her true parentage (Lavos's daughter) is unknown to her for most of the campaign and only surfaces through Demeter's revelation and Magus's confirmation.
- Her private doubt that she can truly never die again, concealed from Cassian (and, as far as the sources show, everyone else).
