Magus¶
Recurring antagonist of the Chrono Conundrum campaign; revealed to be Daphne's sister, born Olivia. Killed by Kaelion Sableflame in the Ending Outline's climax (Planned Canon).
Overview¶
Magus commands forces (goblins, drow, the tabaxi Ozzy) across multiple eras of the timeline and is feared and sought throughout the back half of the played campaign — the party spends many sessions trying to understand her goals, her relationship to Laethan (townsfolk jokingly call him "Magus's boyfriend" at one point), and her connection to Lavos.
History¶
The Chrono Conundrum campaign¶
Magus is referenced from the campaign's middle sessions onward as a shadowy commander whose intentions are unclear — she leaves the party a note reading "Thank you for a wonderful evening" after an unseen visit to Laethan's room (Session 8), and is later revealed to have been "in the back of your classes" at Laethan's Academy years, per her own claim in Session 40.
In Session 40, cornering Laethan in her castle's throne room, Magus reveals that she is not serving Lavos but trying to kill him — believing this requires the deaths of Laethan's friends, particularly Daphne, to force Lavos into the open. When Daphne enters the room, the two recognize each other as sisters; Magus confirms Daphne is Lavos's daughter, and that only Daphne's death can stop him. The confrontation ends in chaos, with Magus pulled through a portal by Onyx's interrupted spellcasting.
The Ending Outline (Planned Canon — never played)¶
Per the outline, Magus's origin is confirmed by the imprisoned Demeter: their mother, Jane Windsor, bargained with Lavos for daughters; Olivia (Magus) discovered the truth and fled to become Magus, while Daphne did not learn of her own nature until later. During Kaelion's coup against Queen Zeal, Magus is present but "visibly not fully aligned with Kaelion." When Kaelion is wounded in the final battle, he grabs Magus and uses her as a shield — she dies "killed by her sister, with her father's power, because of Laethan's brother's cowardice," in front of Daphne, who "carries it" afterward.
