Onyx Battleborne¶

Goliath member of the Chrono Conundrum party. Per the Ending Outline, becomes king of Porre and marries Marle.

Overview¶

Raised by a hag, Odelia, who used magic to make him larger and stronger and used him as a bodyguard for her schemes, Onyx ran from that life shortly before the campaign begins. He's brash, blunt, and gamble-prone (literally — he settles arguments with dice), fiercely protective of the party, and driven throughout the campaign by the search for his birth family.

History¶

Family history¶

A library book found in Session 8 identifies House Battleborne as having three children: Syrus, Shale, and Onyx. His elder brother Obsidian wielded a legendary halberd and vanished around the time Onyx himself went missing as a child — a disappearance tied, it's later revealed, to the goblin/Magus conflict that also destroyed Porre. Onyx's mother is a point of some ambiguity in the source material: Odelia, the hag who raised him and later reveals she gave him away specifically to save him (killed, then zombified by Ozzy, then killed a second time by Onyx himself in Session 29); and Pearl, named as "Onyx's mother" fighting alongside Ozzy in Session 40. See Contradictions and Open Questions for the unresolved question of whether these are the same person, a hag mother versus a birth mother, or an inconsistency in the notes.

The Chrono Conundrum campaign¶

Onyx is present from Session 0, forms a romantic relationship with Marle over the campaign (confirmed engaged/together by the Ending Outline), and takes up Bloodbather, his axe, and later Kellemar/Masamune, the sentient reforged halberd that once belonged to his brother Obsidian. He kills his own zombified mother Odelia (Session 29) and, alongside the party, kills his father figure's rival, the tabaxi Ozzy's forces, repeatedly across the back half of the campaign. He is captured and nearly enslaved by mage-hunting constructs and drow forces multiple times in the campaign's final sessions.

The Ending Outline and beyond (Planned Canon)¶

Per the outline, during the "Gap Year" Onyx and Marle travel to Porre (the Battleborne castle, seized by Magus), hunt down and kill Ozzy, and kill Odelia (a second, distinct reference to "killing Odelia during the retaking of the throne" appears in the Confirmed Details table — see Contradictions and Open Questions for how this relates to her death in Session 29) before Onyx takes his rightful seat on Porre's throne. He proposes to Marle, who accepts; Mr. Frog becomes his right hand; the sentient weapons Masa and Mune retire into a pen on his desk. Onyx and Marle are present at the Windsor wedding as king and queen of Porre.
