Trout Brightshield¶
Gnome Blood Hunter of the Order of the Diamondback, sole surviving student (with childhood rival-turned-friend Rodrick) of the fall of Castle Shain. Joins the Chrono Conundrum party in Session 26. Later, per Planned Canon and Bridge Material, becomes Grandmaster Trout Brightshield, founder of the Order of the Stars and mentor to Wolfgang Windsor.
Overview¶
The smallest and, per his own training, the most stubborn of his childhood cohort at Castle Shain. Raised from infancy by Quinon Hexshade, who bought him as a baby from his starving birth family for a sack of poached fish — the origin of his name ("Uh... Trout"). A blunt, foul-mouthed, methodical investigator as an adult, prone to talking through a case out loud.
History¶
Origins and training¶
Sold as an infant to Quinon, Trout was raised at Castle Shain, seat of the Order of the Diamondback, and trained from the moment he could walk to be "built to hunt monsters." Of thirteen children in his cohort, he alone (with Rodrick) survived the Hunter's Bane ritual that transforms trainees into Blood Hunters — the rest of the class died. He mastered Hemocraft (blood magic) and Mutagen alchemy under Quinon's cold, exacting instruction ("The runt of the litter has the most potential").
The fall of Castle Shain¶
At seventeen, the ancient black dragon known as The Dread Gloom attacked Castle Shain without warning. Quinon led Trout and Rodrick through an escape tunnel but was mortally wounded by acid on the way out, dying with his last words: "I am proud of you both." Trout and Rodrick buried him and parted ways.
Independent hunting years¶
Between seventeen and nineteen, Trout survived as a solitary monster hunter — including tracking and killing a pregnant chimera terrorizing a village, being jailed and nearly lynched as a suspected "blood mage," and meeting a tiefling baron's daughter who sketches and later reappears. He wandered into the Millennium Fair at nineteen, in the middle of the timeline the Chrono Conundrum party was passing through.
The Chrono Conundrum campaign¶
Trout heals an injured, fleeing Laethan during a guard chase (Session 26) and joins the party from that point on. He conceals his mutation and Blood Hunter nature at first (his bandanna slips during the escape, revealing the black tendrils of his Vermillion mutation), but the party — themselves no strangers to being feared for what they are — accepts him. He becomes close with Lucca Dragonaire over the following sessions.
The Ending Outline and beyond (Planned Canon / Bridge Material)¶
Per the Ending Outline, Trout and Lucca break up during the "Gap Year" following Daphne's sacrifice — "mutual, not cruel... neither of them is the villain" — as Trout withdraws into solitary hunting work and grief for Demeter (who, restored, gifts him a divinely powered dragon-slaying bolt: "you will need this some day"). He later meets Elysia Moreau (daughter of Ravina and Draven Moreau) at the Windsor wedding.
The death of the Dread Gloom, and Trout's true parentage (Bridge Material)¶
Additional Materials/The_Last_Diamondback_or_Bound_by_Blood.md picks up roughly ten years after the Chrono Conundrum campaign. Trout, now a solitary wandering hunter, is summoned by an urgent Sending from Elysia — by now Duke Athtar of Moonveil's court mage and a close friend — to the city of Moonveil, which is in crisis: the Dread Gloom has seized a vassal lord's castle in the High Forest and is slowly killing the duchy. Duke Athtar offers Trout a contract to kill it (see Contradictions and Open Questions for the reward figure's inconsistency) plus the deed to the castle itself.
At the palace, Trout unexpectedly reunites with Rodrick, his old Castle Shain rival and fellow Hunter's Bane survivor, among a crowd of mercenaries also drawn by the bounty. The two recognize the Dread Gloom as the dragon that destroyed their order and killed Quinon, and agree to hunt it together, with Elysia joining them as a third. On the road, they clear a village of lizardfolk raiders (freeing captives being held as a food source) and make camp within sight of the ruined castle, where Elysia gives Trout's unnamed Shetland uni-pony the name Karkaddan.
At the castle, the party discovers the truth: the Dread Gloom is a dracolich, sheltered from Elysia's Finger of Death by its undead nature, vulnerable only within a chapel of Demeter that Trout recognizes by its "sacred ground." Elysia locates and shatters its phylactery — a gem embedded in the chest of an amnesiac warforged found unconscious in the dragon's horde of books and treasure — and Trout, drinking three Mutagens at once (Celerity, Cruelty, and Aether), undergoes an extreme transformation into a demonic, winged "blood angel" to fight it airborne. In the battle, the Dread Gloom bites off Rodrick's arm and kills him with a claw through the heart. Trout finishes the dragon for good with the Bolt of Dragon Slaying gifted to him years earlier by Demeter, aided in the final exchange by the newly awakened warforged, whom Trout names Hephaestus on the spot. Trout takes the dragon's remaining eye as a trophy.
Returning to Moonveil, Trout is approached by an elderly gnome couple, Dolores and Angus Dandelion, bee farmers newly displaced by the Dread Gloom's rampage — his birth parents. They confirm what Trout had long suspected: as infants approached by a "tiefling man" (implicitly Quinon) during a desperate winter, they sold him for a sack of fish, the origin of both his name and, had they kept him, the name they would have given him instead — Chance Dandelion. Trout, enraged, nearly lashes out before Elysia's touch steadies him; he leaves them with the castle's ruin behind him and no reconciliation beyond "the dragon is gone now, you'll be able to rebuild."
Duke Athtar rewards Trout with a chest of gold and the castle itself. Trout and Elysia's long-simmering feelings finally surface, beginning a relationship confirmed by the Ending Outline. Over the following years, Trout uses "much of his millions" to rebuild the ruined castle into Castle Orion, with Elysia adding magical wards, defenses, and a teleportation circle, and etching star-like marks onto Hephaestus's breastplate that give the new order its name. He buries Rodrick in the meadow beside the castle beneath his own Diamondback breastplate — making Trout the last Diamondback (see Order of the Diamondback) — with Hephaestus remaining to watch over both the grave and the grounds. Trout and Elysia have a son, Ezra, "named on purpose, by a man who was sold for fish." The story's closing scene shows Daphne arriving in the meadow with a tiefling boy with a white cowlick — almost certainly Wolfgang Windsor's own arrival at Castle Orion for training (see Wolfgang Windsor).
Grandmaster of the Order of the Stars¶
Older Trout Stories.md (Bridge Material) shows an older "Grandmaster Trout," well after this point, running Castle Orion with an inner circle (Vosh, Ember, Solas, Hephaestus, Samson, Gamble, and others) and training Wolfgang Windsor (referred to as "the Red Wolf"). In this vignette he's approached by a Blood Hunter named Farrow about investigating the ruined Castle Umbra — the scene ends unresolved (see Unresolved Threads).
Wolfgang Windsor Backstory.docx confirms Trout as the one Daphne calls on directly to train Wolfgang after his transformation: "You've never asked me for anything, goddess. I'm on my way." Trout teaches Wolfgang both combat control and sign language, and is present, gently, through Wolfgang's roughest early months of learning to live with lycanthropy.
Personality¶
Dry, foul-mouthed, deeply loyal once trust is earned, methodical to the point of narrating his own deductions aloud. Carries real grief for Quinon and (later) for Sera and the students lost in Daemon Karass's raid on Castle Orion, but leads by steady example rather than visible sentiment.
