Udisam

Earth genasi city constable and battlemaster who trained Cassian Windsor in swordplay, at High Cleric Valerica's introduction — not Valerica herself, correcting an earlier error in this wiki (see Contradictions and Open Questions). Killed by Cassian after Cassian discovered him running a violent extortion racket under cover of his city guard post.

Overview

An older earth genasi with stony, cracked grey skin and white arsenic-crystal "hair," missing his right eye (lost to a crossbow bolt, worn under an eyepatch) with several teeth cracked or missing. A decorated battlemaster and city guardsman ("constable") of unmistakable skill and startling speed for his age, dressed in worn leather armor with a longsword and a dirk knife. Coarse, foul-mouthed, and nihilistic — he goaded Cassian relentlessly, mocked "hope" and paladin-style idealism as naive, and lived by a self-styled survival philosophy of "six seconds": stay in the immediate moment, adapt or die, "don't fight with hope."

History

Cassian met Udisam at the Temple of Daphne's house of healing, where High Cleric Valerica introduced them — Udisam was there being treated for gout. Impressed by tales of battlemasters, Cassian asked to be trained; Udisam agreed, on the condition Cassian first prove himself by intervening in a street robbery.

What followed was months of genuine, effective training — Udisam taught Cassian proper stances, how to fight and move in armor, and technique drawn from multiple fighting styles (berserker, monk, battlemaster), pushing him to use his size and channel his anger productively rather than fight on "hope" alone. But Cassian also gradually discovered Udisam's double life: under cover of his city guard post, Udisam ran a protection racket, extorting "tips" from a fence, a drug dealer selling a substance called "red sand" (which Udisam also used personally), and a fisherman — beating those who fell behind on payment.

Death

The breaking point came when Cassian witnessed Udisam brutally beating a pawnbroker (a copper dragonborn) over a missed payment, breaking his leg. Cassian intervened, healed the dragonborn, and confronted Udisam, who baited him into a duel with a cruel remark about Cassian's parents. The fight was close — Udisam disarmed Cassian early and had the clear advantage in skill — until Cassian, driven by escalating rage, shattered Udisam's sword with a divinely-charged strike. In the fight's final moments something dark and unfamiliar surfaced in Cassian: his eyes "glowed a ravenous red" and his voice took on an unnatural, compelling force as he commanded Udisam to "Beg" — and Udisam, seemingly against his will, obeyed. Cassian then killed him, first with his own sword through the gut and then, after a final taunt ("Despite all your bluster... you're no better than me"), with Udisam's own dirk knife to the throat — denying him last words, muttering a prayer for mercy on his soul ("Mitera eleison") first.

The nature of the dark power that surfaced in that final exchange — the compulsion effect, the red glow, nothing like Cassian's usual divine abilities — is never explained in the source material. See Unresolved Threads.
