Order of the Dragon¶
Seated at Castle Drakenshield, the order that triggered the Schism — and, generations later, destroyed itself from within.
Overview¶
Unusually, the Dragon used Draconic as its casting language from the very beginning, rather than the Abyssal shared by the other early orders. All Ghostslayers, their philosophy was "tradition is not truth," and they were unconventional in most of what they did. Deeply enmeshed in the politics of the realms near Castle Drakenshield, they were highly educated, ambitious, and politically savage — not just monster hunters but diplomats, spies, and assassins, believing Blood Hunters shouldn't be forced to hide in the mountains like the monsters they hunted. Their sigil was a dragon wrapped around a sword. The grandmaster's title passed through "an insidious and incestuous oligarchy" — a small elite that kept itself in power.
History¶
The Dragon declared "the old way is dead" after the Order of the Abyss's disappearance, proposing the reforms that became the Schism: switch to Draconic as the shared casting language, replace single-grandmaster rule with a council, and pull away from Abyssal power and demonic pacts. The Succubus and Tiger joined this new school; the Unicorn, Wraith, and Chimera did not; the Diamondback split into civil war before eventually adopting it.
Despite founding the movement, the Dragon did not survive it. Their own pride, arrogance, and oligarchic succession system eventually "devolved into a bloody civil war" that destroyed the order from within.
