House Sableflame¶
Laethan Windsor's birth family: tiefling scholars whose disowning of their younger son set the entire Chrono Conundrum campaign — and Gods and Dragons' central antagonism — in motion.
Overview¶
Introduced in Laethan's backstory material as a family of arcane academics obsessed with reputation and discipline. After Laethan's expulsion from the Arcane Academy (engineered by a jealous classmate, Felix Blackwood — see Laethan Windsor and Contradictions and Open Questions), his parents disowned him outright, erasing his existence from family records. By the time of Gods and Dragons, the family is functionally a hostile organization under Kaelion's leadership, dedicated to destroying House Windsor.
Members¶
- Aeren Sableflame — patriarch; a stoic historian specializing in lost magical artifacts. Disowned Laethan; later, per
Wolfgang Windsor Backstory.docx, the architect of Bruthys Countrat's grooming and the primary torturer of Wolfgang during his captivity. Survives Daphne's retaliatory strike on the Sableflame safehouse (rescued by Kaelion). - Sylria Sableflame — matriarch; an enchanter of "unparalleled skill." Disowned Laethan, telling him "infernal blood always corrupts" to his face.
- Kaelion Sableflame — elder son; see Kaelion Sableflame. Confirmed principal antagonist of Gods and Dragons.
- Amara Sableflame — younger daughter; the one family member who never truly abandoned Laethan, secretly supporting him and eventually reconciling in person (invited to the Windsor wedding per the Ending Outline).
History¶
Laethan's disowning¶
Per Laethan Stories/6. The Disowning.docx, after Laethan's expulsion, Aeren and Sylria formally disowned him; Kaelion struck him; only Amara showed sympathy, secretly giving him a letter of introduction to a contact in the city as he left.
Rebuilding under Kaelion¶
Per Wolfgang Windsor Backstory.docx, following the destruction of a Sableflame safehouse by Daphne's divine retaliation (after Wolfgang's rescue), the family "did not die; it curdled" under Kaelion, rebuilding with financiers, ritualists, and mercenaries, explicitly aimed at bringing Laethan "to his knees" and erasing the Windsor name.
Relationships¶
- House Windsor — the family Laethan left, and the family Kaelion is now dedicated to destroying.
