Laethan Windsor

Tiefling rogue-wizard, member of the Chrono Conundrum party, and (per Planned Canon) husband of Daphne Windsor and father of the Wolfgang, Demyra, and Cassian Windsor triplets. Born Laethan Sableflame; took the Windsor name after his marriage.

Overview

Laethan is a tiefling of infernal lineage — dusky crimson skin, backward-curving obsidian-textured horns, gold eyes with black sclera, a dexterous spaded tail. A trickster archetype: quiet and guarded about his past, quick with illusion magic and sleight of hand, chaotic good, and fiercely loyal once trust is earned (Backstory Canon, Laethan.md / Laethan Sableflame.docx).

History

The Arcane Academy and expulsion

Laethan was born to Tiefling scholars Aeren and Sylria Sableflame, alongside an elder brother, Kaelion, and a younger sister, Amara. He earned admission to the Arcane Academy as a prodigy of illusion and enchantment, but faced prejudice from the start — snubbed at his own admission ceremony, "IMP" carved into his dorm door (Laethan Stories/1. The Red In The Room.docx).

The harassment escalated over his time there. Someone began leaving cryptic, increasingly complex notes for him in library books — sigils and diagrams that, when finally assembled and spoken aloud, triggered a forbidden soul-binding summoning array in his room. He was never able to prove the notes were planted (a matching scrap was "found" under his mattress, in handwriting that never appeared again after a final note calling him "fireblood"); the incident earned him a month's library ban and formal "academic review" rather than expulsion outright (Laethan Stories/2. Notes In The Shadows.docx). Who planted the notes is never established — see Unresolved Threads. Physical bullying, led by a human classmate named Felix Blackwood, continued in parallel: Laethan was ambushed and beaten in a courtyard while a professor watched and simply walked away rather than intervening (Laethan Stories/3. The Lesson in Bruises.docx).

Not everything about the Academy was cruelty. In an elemental conjuration class, Laethan produced a flame of unusual precision and beauty — "white-hot at its center... edges shimmered gold" — earning a rare moment of genuine, unmocking respect from his classmates. He wrote to his sister Amara about it; her reply became a line he carried for the rest of his life: "Fire can destroy... but it can also warm the coldest rooms. Never let them tell you which kind you're meant for" (Laethan Stories/4. A Spark of Pride.docx). This is very likely the same line the Ending Outline has Amara say to him again, decades later, at the moment his infernal wings finally manifest after Daphne's resurrection ("Amara said fire can warm the coldest rooms. The wings are the answer") — see Campaigns/Chrono Conundrum/The Ending Outline.md.

During a Founders' Day demonstration, Laethan volunteered to perform an illusion of the Academy's founding. Felix Blackwood secretly sabotaged the lecture hall's wards, causing the illusion to erupt into destructive magical feedback. The Headmaster expelled Laethan on the spot, with no hearing (Laethan Stories/5. The Founding Spectacle.docx; see Contradictions and Open Questions — an earlier/shorter account in Laethan.md doesn't name Felix and frames the incident as an accident of Laethan's own making rather than sabotage).

Returning home, Laethan was disowned by his parents and struck by Kaelion; only Amara showed him quiet sympathy, giving him a letter of introduction as he left (Laethan Stories/6. The Disowning.docx).

Life as a thief

Cast out, Laethan followed Amara's letter of introduction to Athkatla, where he found Drift — a fellow tiefling fixer/alchemist who "owed Amara a favor" and became Laethan's ongoing contact for jobs. Laethan's first job for Drift was recovering stolen reagents from a rival alchemist, accomplished with a well-placed illusion of vengeful ghosts rather than violence (Laethan Stories/7. Smoke and Silver.docx).

Life in the city was not kind regardless: he was wrongly accused of a theft he didn't commit after a noble's coin purse went missing in a tavern, arrested purely because of his appearance, and had to pick his own cell's lock and flee ("No one's coming to save you. So learn to save yourself.") — the dramatized origin of the "wrong place, wrong time" pattern he later describes in his own words (Laethan Stories/8. Wrong Place.docx; compare Laethan Stories/Laethan Sableflame.docx Q&A).

His reputation shifted from mere thief to something more when Drift hired him to rob magistrate Tarren Vale — not for gold, but for letters and petitions proving Vale had been suppressing appeals from tiefling and "half-blood" families shut out of guilds and housing. Laethan took only the letters (leaving the gold, to make it look like ordinary theft) and anonymously delivered them to the temple square; dozens of families got answers. The city began calling him "the Infernal Thief of Justice" (Laethan Stories/9. The Job That Stuck.docx) — the same nickname Amara references, delighted, in her letter in Laethan Stories/10. Keep The Fire Alive.docx, where he acquires the first piece of what becomes an ongoing collection of magical curiosities (a small glowing crystal sphere) and burns her letter after reading it to protect her from any connection to him.

The Chrono Conundrum campaign

The Chrono Conundrum campaign

Laethan begins the campaign at Session 0, drawn into events at the Millennium Fair alongside Onyx, Belgarian, and Arthur, and soon Daphne and Marle. Across 51 played sessions, the party time-travels through multiple eras of the same world, and Laethan repeatedly serves as scout, translator (fluent in Goblin, Draconic, Elvish, Thieves' Cant), and comic relief, while carrying real trauma from his expulsion and exile.

Notable played-canon beats: he acquires and loses a Scythe of Slaughter to William; he's whipped and tortured in an Enhasa prison alongside Daphne (Session 9); he falls in love with Daphne over the course of the campaign, which surfaces explicitly once his brother Kaelion is confirmed alive and hunting the party (Sessions 26–30); during the confrontation with Magus in Session 40, forced visions reveal both his own history and imagined visions of Daphne's sacrifice, at which point he recognizes and admits he loves her.

By Session 51 (where the played campaign log ends), Laethan and the rest of the party are fugitives in Enhasa — wanted "dead or alive," with a bounty explicitly higher on Daphne than on him — and Daphne has just been captured.

The Ending Outline (Planned Canon — never played)

Per Chrono_Conundrum_Ending_Outline.docx.md, the intended conclusion has Laethan steal a ring during his deliberate, staged arrest in Enhasa (recognizing it instantly as "the ring he would give her"), fight through Kaelion's coup and Magus's death, and watch Daphne choose to sacrifice herself to banish Lavos. He slides the ring onto her finger after her death. During the "Gap Year" that follows, he wanders the planes alone, "hating everything green" as a reminder of her. When Daphne is resurrected a year later, his 20th-level feature triggers, granting him infernal wings; on their wedding night, she offers him immortality as her husband, which he accepts. He takes her name, becoming Laethan Windsor, and stands beside her — a former "terrorist" with a million-gold bounty — as she mediates peace between humanoid and monster races.

Gods and Dragons

Per Wolfgang Windsor Backstory.docx (Bridge Material), Laethan and Daphne raise the triplets on the Windsor Estate. Laethan teaches all three his rogue's trade — including a private sign language and thieves'-cant-style signals for danger — "a father's paranoia" born of having been disowned and hunted. When Wolfgang is abducted, Laethan searches obsessively (walking "the underworld of port cities... paying in coin that left no trail") and is present, protective and controlled, throughout Wolfgang's recovery, gentling the household's rhythms (quieter voices, slower movements) to accommodate his son's trauma. He keeps a hellhound puppy, gifted by Daphne and named Fifi, for company during the years Wolfgang is away.

Family

Relationships

  • Daphne Windsor — fellow party member, then wife. Their relationship develops across the played campaign and is consummated (per Planned Canon) in marriage after her resurrection.
  • Kaelion Sableflame — brother; the campaign's confirmed BBEG going into Gods and Dragons, and (per the Wolfgang backstory) the architect, alongside their father, of Wolfgang's abduction and torture.
  • Trout Brightshield — party member during Chrono Conundrum; later, per Bridge Material, the trusted teacher Daphne calls on to help their son Wolfgang control his lycanthropy.
  • Drift — tiefling fixer/alchemist in Athkatla who gave Laethan his first thieving jobs after his exile, at Amara's request.
  • Felix Blackwood — human Academy classmate; the person responsible for both physical bullying and the Founders' Day sabotage that got Laethan expelled.

Secrets / Hidden Information

  • Laethan and Daphne chose not to tell Wolfgang the full truth of Bruthys Countrat's betrayal and the mask-swap that put him in danger in Demyra's place — see Unresolved Threads.
