Lavos¶
A cataclysmic, world-destroying entity — worshipped as a god by cultists across multiple eras, and, per the Ending Outline, Daphne's biological father. Destroyed in Daphne's sacrifice (Planned Canon).
Overview¶
Lavos's rise is documented, in the far-future timeline the party visits (Session 19), via a corrupted video journal: Lavos destroyed the world, took over Demeter's pantheon ("killing or enslaving the gods"), had cultists slaughter druids ("causing nature itself to decay"), and eventually left to "destroy another planet." The post-apocalyptic future timeline dates itself "258 AL" — After Lavos. Lizardfolk cultists encountered in the prehistoric era worship Lavos as a red star in the sky, turning their eyes to it as they die.
History¶
The Chrono Conundrum campaign¶
Lavos is initially an abstract, mythic threat — a destroyer god behind a ruined church of "Guardia," and the deity a corrupted future's chieftain-cultists worship. Daphne's own magic begins responding strangely to Lavos from around Session 33 onward (turning necrotic, granting unnatural power, tinting her skin blue), long before either she or the party understand why. She reaches out to Lavos directly via Sending in Session 45; he responds, cryptically, confirming a connection between them.
The Ending Outline (Planned Canon — never played)¶
Per the outline, Demeter reveals in her Enhasa cell that Daphne's mother, Jane Windsor, "made a bargain with Lavos for daughters" — meaning both Daphne and her sister Olivia/Magus are Lavos's children. Lavos later hijacks a portal meant to take the party somewhere safe, trapping Daphne alone on his plane and giving her a choice: live eternally there with him, or sacrifice herself to banish him from the world. She chooses sacrifice. Lavos attempts to break his word and absorb her anyway, but "she is too much and he is destroyed" — leaving behind "a kernel of Daphne... a single, golden seed. Three unborn babies protected by Demeter." His own absorbed power is later described as turning against him during Daphne's resurrection ritual, "the sacrifice completing something rather than ending it."
Gods and Dragons — cult remnants¶
Per Additional Materials/Cassian_Windsor_Backstory.md, worship of Lavos did not end with his destruction. By the time Cassian trains at the Temple of Daphne, the temple describes "a hive of Lavos cultists" as a real, if diminishing, threat — "few cells left... losing followers and faith daily" — enough to warrant besieging a fortified mountain stronghold with allied clerics and paladins. Cassian's love interest Rhea is an aasimar death cleric who fought for the cult in this siege, describing Lavos as the only god who answered her prayers during the worst period of her life, and who gave her "the power to reap." The siege scatters the cult (an earthquake collapses the stronghold mid-battle) but does not confirm it destroyed outright.
