Ghast

Enigmatic figure residing at the End of Time, a magicless nexus between the eras the Chrono Conundrum party travels through. Also spelled "Gahst" in some session notes.

Overview

Ghast greets the party with tea, coffee, biscuits, and — memorably — weed and lasagna, in a cozy apartment suspended in nothingness. He offers cryptic guidance about the portals available to the party but professes not to know their future. Laethan recognizes him as unsettlingly familiar and eventually identifies him as Theodore Ghasper, a former professor from the Arcane Academy, after finding an old textbook (The Theory of Magic) bearing that name and Laethan's own marginal notes (Session 22).

History

Introduced in Session 22, Ghast explains that no magic (arcane, divine, natural, or pact) functions at the End of Time because there's "nothing to draw from" there. He directs the party toward three portals with cryptic hints about where each leads, insults Onyx's hag mother unprompted, and mentions two unnamed "colleagues" (implied to be the fair's blacksmith and the pot-selling shopkeeper from Session 1) who may have been responsible for bringing the party to Truce in the first place.

Per the Ending Outline, Ghast is present at Chapter 6 ("The Long Rest") after Magus's death, already aware of what's coming ("Gahst is there. Quiet. He already knows"), and later gifts the party the Chrono Trigger — a device allowing travel through time and planes at will — after Daphne's sacrifice. He and a figure named Melcher are both listed as attending the Windsor wedding.
