William

Recurring NPC across multiple eras of the Chrono Conundrum timeline — the king's advisor, and a persistent thorn in the party's side. Explicitly logged in the Ending Outline as an unresolved "Loose End."

Overview

William repeatedly appears as a trusted advisor to the royal court of Truce/Enhasa across different points in history, and repeatedly steals the party's gold, gambling winnings, or possessions — the mocking phrase "better luck next time" becomes associated with him from Session 2 onward. He identifies magic items for the party (a mixed blessing, given his own behavior), appears aged and long-lived across eras separated by centuries, and, in the far-future timeline, is found still alive and offering cryptic information about Lavos in exchange for supplies.

History

William first robs the party in Session 1 (posing as a fellow gambler) and reappears across nearly every subsequent era the party visits, always recognizable, always somewhat untrustworthy, and always seemingly aware of more than he admits. In the post-apocalyptic future (Session 17–22), an aged William claims no responsibility for Lavos's rise and offers a trade of information for supplies from a bunker. He's present at the royal court in the deep past as well, tending to the king and identifying Laethan's Scythe of Slaughter.

The Ending Outline's Confirmed Details table lists him simply: "Loose End — left open for later inconvenience."
