Wolfgang Windsor

Second-born of the Windsor triplets, son of Laethan Windsor and Daphne Windsor. A Blood Hunter with lycanthropy, trained by Trout Brightshield at Castle Orion. Known among his students as the Red Wolf.

Played by the same player who played Laethan during Chrono Conundrum (per the Ending Outline's closing note on the dynasty).

Overview

Wolfgang, Demyra, and Cassian all present as tieflings but are, per the Ending Outline, a custom race blending elf, tiefling, and aasimar bloodlines. The Ending Outline describes Wolfgang as "the shadow of both bloodlines" — infernal and divine at once. He is quieter and more withdrawn than his siblings, a natural listener, fiercely protective, and shaped profoundly by a year-plus of captivity and torture in his teens.

History

Childhood

Raised on the Windsor Estate, Wolfgang was closest to his black jaguar, Kitty — gifted by Daphne when he was seven ("he's very small," she said; he was not). He and Demyra bonded over music (she on lyre, he learning to play alongside her); he and Cassian wrestled constantly in the garden. Laethan trained all three children in rogue's tricks — signals, sleight of hand, a private sign language — "for a life he hoped they'd never need." The family's honorary fourth sibling was Bruthys Countrat, a neighbor boy who spent years as a near-permanent guest at the Windsor table.

The abduction

At sixteen, the triplets were lured to an illicit masquerade by Bruthys, who had spent years being groomed by Aeren Sableflame (Laethan's estranged father) into believing the Windsor children needed to be "saved" from their goddess mother's influence — beginning with Demyra, the firstborn and intended diplomat. At the last moment, overcome with guilt, Bruthys swapped Demyra's mask for his own simpler one and gave it to Wolfgang instead, sending Wolfgang unknowingly into the trap meant for his sister.

Wolfgang was ambushed, drugged, and abducted by four Sableflame agents led by his uncle Kaelion — fighting hard enough to break bones and draw black blood before being subdued, and deliberately gouging deep heel-marks into the ground as a signal, per Laethan's long-ago training ("leave signs... we will find you").

Back at the estate, Daphne — attempting to force answers out of Bruthys with a show of divine power — triggered a hidden Power Word Kill ward that Aeren had carved into the boy's chest specifically to punish her for intervening; Bruthys died believing he'd saved Demyra at the cost of Wolfgang, his last words "It was supposed to be Demyra."

Captivity

Wolfgang was held by House Sableflame for over a year. Cold iron shackles suppressed his divine blood; Aeren and Kaelion treated his suffering as data collection ("purification," "restoration of bloodlines"), documenting his healing rate, the color of his blood and tears, and his pain responses in a leather journal. Torture included repeated re-opened wounds, starvation, a device that burned out his left eye attempting to "extract" his divinity, and the deliberate, repeated breaking of his left hand's knuckles until they healed permanently misaligned. During one transfer, his captors caged him beside a feral werewolf and let it bite him — "a catalyst," in Aeren's words — deliberately infecting him with lycanthropy.

Wolfgang's family did not sit idle during the captivity. Additional Materials/Cassian_Windsor_Backstory.md (Cassian's own account) describes a specific near-rescue: Cassian, following a months-long trail of bribes and threats, tracked Wolfgang to a warehouse just as he was being loaded, caged and unconscious, onto a transport wagon. Cassian fought his way in, killing several guards and Corus Sableflame (Kaelion's son, Cassian's cousin) in the process, but the wagon escaped amid the resulting fire before he could reach it — the trail burned away with the warehouse, and Wolfgang remained missing for some further months. Wolfgang has no memory of this attempt, having been unconscious throughout.

Wolfgang's first shift, provoked by the infection and his own rage, destroyed the safehouse some time later. Daphne felt the block on her divine sight break and led a pantheon-assisted rescue (Demeter, Tyr, Lathander, Selûne, and Kelemvor all responded to her call), retrieving him half-transformed and near death. Kaelion pulled Aeren from the wreckage and began rebuilding.

Cassian's account of the family's vigil during the captivity also gives the fullest description of Wolfgang's actual homecoming: covered in blood and matted fur, a fresh scar over his ruined eye, recognizable to his siblings mainly by a new cowlick of white hair. Two nights later, Wolfgang's first transformation at home nearly killed Cassian before Laethan intervened and Daphne subdued him — see Cassian Windsor for that account in full.

Learning to live with the curse

Back home, Wolfgang's first full moon nearly destroyed the house before Daphne drove him back with conjured seawater. Realizing they couldn't manage the curse alone, Daphne sent for Trout Brightshield, who came without hesitation ("You've never asked me for anything, goddess. I'm on my way"). Trout took Wolfgang to Castle Orion — Trout's own rebuilt fortress near Moonveil, not (per GM clarification and Additional Materials/The_Last_Diamondback_or_Bound_by_Blood.md) a Lucca Dragonaire design, as Wolfgang Windsor Backstory.docx originally claimed — home to the newly forming Order of the Stars, and trained him for roughly four years — teaching control of the curse, sign language for when speech felt like too much, and the philosophy that "dangerous and evil aren't the same thing." The_Last_Diamondback_or_Bound_by_Blood.md closes on Trout, in the meadow outside the freshly rebuilt castle, watching a "glowing woman in bright yellow" (Daphne) arrive with a "tiefling boy with black hair and a white cowlick" — almost certainly this scene, Daphne delivering young Wolfgang to Trout for the first time.

At Castle Orion, Wolfgang formed relationships with fellow students Sera (a tiefling performer, his first partner, who was secretly pregnant when she died defending younger students in a raid orchestrated by the jealous, rival student Daemon Karass; possibly the same "Sera" who left Cassian's love interest Arabella's traveling circus after "a bit of trouble" — see Contradictions and Open Questions) and Kali (a tabaxi Lycan, a more combative on-and-off partner, who was killed by a professional werewolf hunter during a hunt with Wolfgang — an encounter that triggered a caged-trap flashback to his own captivity and caused him to flee rather than fight, a moment of survival instinct he has not forgiven himself for). Daemon's raid on Castle Orion killed six students (Titus, Hawk, Anders, Gregory, Rasha, Vex) and Sera; Daemon's own fate afterward is not resolved in the source material (see Unresolved Threads).

Return home

At twenty-one, Wolfgang returned to the Windsor Estate. His family had learned, through Laethan's example, to move and speak gently around him — no shouting, no sudden loud noise, sign language as a shared household language. He struggles with sensory overload, can no longer play lyre due to his damaged hand (Demyra taught him hand-drum instead, which only requires keeping time), and briefly, dangerously, half-shifts when he tries marijuana with his siblings (he does not smoke again afterward). He, Demyra, and Cassian get matching tattoos (his placed directly over the worst of his torture scars) from a tattoo artist named Eleni, which Daphne then magically empowers with Sending and Locate Creature between the three siblings.

Personality

Withdrawn but not cold; an unexpectedly good listener among his students at Castle Orion; deeply protective of his siblings, flinching away from loud enthusiasm but craving physical anchors (Kitty sleeping curled around him is often the only thing that lets him rest). Carries guilt over Sera's and Kali's deaths and over having run rather than fought the night Kali died.

Secrets / Hidden Information

  • Wolfgang was never told that Bruthys switched masks to save Demyra in his place, or the full truth of the trap that killed Bruthys.
  • He does not know that Sera was pregnant when she died; Daphne quietly took the unborn soul at Trout's request.

Unresolved Threads

  • Daemon Karass's fate after the Castle Orion raid.
  • Whether Wolfgang ever learns the truth about the mask-swap.
  • The lasting damage to his left eye and left hand — whether anything addresses this going forward.

See Unresolved Threads for the full list.
